Before washing, shake off dust from both sides of the carpet or vacuum them. Then, use the right detergent according to the material of the surface fabric. Place the whole carpet on the ground, soak it with water, and then dip a soft brush in a detergent and start scrubbing, and wash that area with clean water, and remove the dirty water right away, moving on with this from one area to the next, then the next, to avoid the dirt seeping back to the blankets and crossing color, repeating this procedure all over the whole blanket until you are done. Carpet edge is more absorbent to water, therefore, should be rinsed with plenty of water with more rinsing until the last trace of detergent is totally removed. After that, apply a 1% concentration of acetic acid or spray a 2% white vinegar solution evenly on carpet surface, after that, rinse with water again. If a cylindrical drum type machine is used for dehydration, air dry the dehydrated carpet with the surface up on a hanger shelf and prevent dust from falling onto the surface (with a cover above it ) while drying in the shade, to avoid strong direct sunshine, which will cause the colors to fade.
Most edges of woolen carpet are white and prone to picking up the dirt from the dirty water again. If that happens, use hydrogen peroxide to bleach it white by the following steps: Brush the hydrogen peroxide bleaching along the fringes from top down. After the completion of bleaching, wash the fringes with water using a hair brush, until all the hydrogen peroxide is gone. Use of lot of water, as not to damage the material during rinsing.
